How to Build a 30-Day Social Media Marketing Plan for a Small Business

A 30-day calendar with check marks and a rising arrow

Many small businesses post when they remember, then wonder why nothing happens. A short, structured plan fixes that. Thirty days is long enough to see patterns and short enough to stay motivated.

Week 0: Decide the basics

Set one goal. Choose one: more WhatsApp enquiries, more shop visits, more online orders or more followers who actually buy. If you pick all four, you will measure none.

Know your customer. Write down who buys from you: age, area, what they worry about, how they find you. A one-paragraph description is enough.

Choose platforms. Do not try to be everywhere. For most local businesses:

  • Instagram for visual products and reach.
  • Facebook for local communities and older customers.
  • WhatsApp for turning interest into conversations and sales.
  • YouTube Shorts if you can produce short videos regularly.

Start with two, and do them well.

Week 1: Fix your foundations

  1. Complete each profile: clear name, logo, bio, location and contact.
  2. Add a link that goes somewhere useful (your WhatsApp or website).
  3. Write a short pinned post explaining what you do and how to order.
  4. Set up a WhatsApp Business account with a catalogue and quick replies.

Week 2: Create your content bank

Plan around themes: show the work, teach, prove, sell and show the people. Our guide to Instagram content pillars explains these.

Prepare:

  • 8 to 10 posts
  • 4 short videos
  • A set of Stories templates

Photograph and film in one or two sessions. Real photos beat stock images.

Week 3: Publish and engage

  • Post four to five times a week.
  • Reply to every comment and message within a few hours.
  • Spend ten minutes a day commenting on local accounts, customers and community pages.
  • Share user content with permission.

Posting is half the job. Replying is the other half.

Week 4: Review and adjust

Check your numbers:

Measure What it tells you
Messages and enquiries Real interest
Saves and shares Content people value
Profile visits Whether your hook works
Link clicks Whether people act

Keep the two best formats, drop what failed, and plan the next 30 days.

When to add paid ads

Once you know what content gets responses, put a small budget behind your best post. Boosting something that already works is more efficient than boosting something untested. Our Meta Ads guide explains the approach.

A realistic time budget

About five to seven hours a week if you do it yourself: planning, shooting, editing, posting and replying. If that is too much, outsourcing may cost less than the lost time. See our social media packages and pricing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying followers. They never buy from you and they damage your engagement.
  • Using the same content on every platform without adjusting.
  • Ignoring comments and messages.
  • Expecting sales in week one.
