How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI (A Local Guide for India)

A customer used to type “best interior designer in Salem” and scroll ten links. Today many of them ask an AI tool the same question and read a short answer. If your business is not named in that answer, you lose the enquiry before the customer ever visits a website.
Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how these tools pick businesses, and anyone claiming a secret formula is guessing. What we do know is where the answers come from: the same public information that already powers local search. That means you can prepare.
What AI answers are built from
AI tools that recommend local businesses draw on information that is public, consistent and easy to understand. In practice that is:
- Your Google Business Profile: category, services, hours, photos, reviews and Q&A.
- Your website: clear pages that say what you do and where.
- Reviews on Google and other platforms, including what customers actually write.
- Mentions elsewhere: directories, local news, social profiles, other websites.
If those four tell the same clear story, you are easy to recommend. If they contradict each other, you get skipped.
Step 1: Make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate
This is the foundation. Check:
- The primary category is the most specific one that fits (“Jewellery store,” not just “Store”).
- Services and products are listed with short descriptions.
- Hours are correct, including holidays and festival days.
- The same name, address and phone number appear on your website and directories.
Our Google Business Profile guide walks through setup, and our Google Maps SEO service covers ongoing management.
Step 2: Write pages that answer real questions
AI tools quote content that answers a question directly. For each service, add a short page or section that starts with a plain answer:
“We offer GST billing software setup for retail shops in Kallakurichi. Setup takes about one day, and we train your staff on the same visit.”
Then add the details: who it is for, what it includes, how pricing works and what to expect. Use a clear question as a heading, for example “How much does a website cost for a small shop?” and answer it in the first two sentences.
Step 3: Say where you work
Name the town, district and areas you serve in plain language. This is why we built location pages, such as Kallakurichi. A page that clearly states a place is easier to match with a “near me” or “in [town]” question.
Only claim locations you genuinely serve. Claiming an office you do not have damages trust and breaks Google’s guidelines.
Step 4: Earn genuine reviews that describe the work
Reviews with details (“fixed our Google Maps listing and calls doubled in a month”) carry more meaning than “Good service.” You cannot script them, but you can ask customers to mention what they bought and what changed. Never pay for reviews or write your own.
Step 5: Be consistent across the web
Check that your business name and phone number match on Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook and Instagram. Mixed spellings and old numbers confuse both search engines and AI tools.
Step 6: Add structured data
Ask your developer to add schema markup for your business, services and FAQs. It labels your information so machines read it correctly. It is not a trick, just tidy labelling.
What not to do
- Do not stuff pages with AI-generated filler. It adds noise without answers.
- Do not copy the same page for ten towns.
- Do not expect overnight results. Trust builds over months.
How to check where you stand
Once a month, ask ChatGPT and Google a few questions your customers would ask, for example “best digital marketing agency in Kallakurichi.” Write down who is named and why. That gives you a baseline and shows what your competitors do better.
