Instagram Content Pillars: What a Local Business Should Post Every Week

The hardest question in social media is “What do I post today?” The answer is not creativity every morning. It is a system. Content pillars are a small set of repeating themes, so you never start from zero.
What is a content pillar?
A pillar is a topic you will post about regularly. Five is enough for most businesses. Each one has a job: build trust, show products, answer questions, prove results or invite action.
The five pillars
1. Show the work. Behind-the-scenes shots, how a product is made, a day at the shop. People trust what they can see.
2. Teach something. Tips and answers: how to choose, how to care for it, common mistakes. A saved post is worth more than a liked one.
3. Prove it. Customer messages (with permission), before-and-afters, delivered orders. Never invent testimonials or results.
4. Sell clearly. New arrivals, offers, prices, availability. Be direct: what it is, what it costs, how to order.
5. Show the people. Your team, your story, local events, festival wishes. This builds a human connection and sets you apart from chain stores.
A sample week
| Day | Pillar | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Teach | Carousel: “3 mistakes when buying X” |
| Tuesday | Sell | Reel: new arrival, price shown |
| Wednesday | Show the work | Stories: behind the scenes |
| Thursday | Prove it | Customer photo or review screenshot |
| Friday | Teach | Reel answering a customer question |
| Saturday | People | Photo of the team or a local moment |
| Sunday | Rest or Stories | Poll or Q&A in Stories |
Adjust to your capacity. Four good posts a week beat seven rushed ones.
Choose the right format for the job
- Reels reach new people. Use them for teaching and showing products.
- Carousels work for tips and step-by-step content, and get saved.
- Stories keep your followers warm with polls, quick updates and behind-the-scenes.
- Single photos suit announcements and proof.

Make a month of content in one session
- List 10 questions customers ask you.
- List 10 products or services you want to push.
- Take photos and short videos in one sitting, in good daylight.
- Write captions in a batch, and schedule them.
Batching saves more time than any tool.
Use customer questions as your idea bank
Every question on WhatsApp or in your DMs is a post. If one person asks, ten others wonder.
Measure what matters
Look weekly at saves, shares, profile visits and messages, not just likes. These show real interest. Double down on the pillar that produces enquiries.
Common mistakes
- Posting only offers. People unfollow constant sales pitches.
- No call to action. Tell people what to do next.
- Copying a big brand’s style without your own voice.
- Inconsistency. Posting daily for a week then vanishing for a month.
