How Much Does a Website Cost in India? What You Are Really Paying For

“How much does a website cost?” is the first question every business owner asks, and the answers range from almost nothing to several lakhs. Both can be fair prices. What matters is knowing what you are paying for, so you can compare quotes properly.

We are not going to give one number, because it would mislead you. Instead, here is what drives the price and what to ask.

What changes the cost

1. Number and type of pages. A five-page business website is a very different job from a 100-product online shop.

2. Design: template or custom. A well-chosen template with your branding is faster and cheaper. A fully custom design costs more because every layout is made from scratch.

3. Features. Online payments, booking forms, product catalogues, multiple languages and customer logins all add work.

4. Content. Who writes the text and takes the photos? If you supply good content, the cost drops. If the agency writes and photographs everything, it rises.

5. Mobile and speed. Most visitors in India use phones. A site that is fast and works well on mobile takes proper work, and it matters for Google rankings.

6. SEO setup. Page titles, descriptions, headings and clean structure should be built in from the start, not added later.

The costs people forget

  • Domain name: you pay yearly. Make sure it is registered in your name.
  • Hosting: where the site lives. Cheap hosting can make the site slow.
  • SSL certificate: the padlock. Most good hosts include it.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security fixes.
  • Changes later: ask how updates are charged.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. What exactly is included? Ask for the list of pages and features in writing.
  2. Who owns the website, domain and content when it is finished?
  3. How many revisions are included?
  4. Will it be mobile friendly and fast, and can you show an example?
  5. Is basic SEO included?
  6. What happens if something breaks after launch?
  7. Can I edit the text and images myself?

Warning signs

  • A very low price with no list of what is included.
  • The agency registers the domain in its own name.
  • No examples of previous work, or examples that do not load.
  • Promises of “guaranteed first page on Google”.
  • Pressure to pay everything before any work is shown.

Is a cheap website a bad idea?

Not always. A simple one-page site with your services, phone number and map can be enough for a small local business, and it costs far less than a large site. Problems start when a cheap site is slow, hard to update or owned by someone else.

Match the website to your goal

  • Just need to be found and contacted: a simple site plus a good Google listing.
  • Want to show many products: a catalogue or small shop.
  • Want to sell online: an e-commerce site with payment setup.
